Council Reduction Reversal Fails

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A plan to undo a pending reduction of aldermen in the city council failed last night.

The city council has been trying to undo a charter ordinance that is set to reduce the number of city council members from 16 to 10 and match their districts with the districts that the county uses to select supervisors. The city council voted 7 to 7 in a technical tie on the measure, but needed to have a 2/3rds vote in order to force the change.

Alderperson Susan Holzschuh says that she'll be bringing a new version of the plan around after the April elections. "And in that proposal it will remain the 16 aldermen, but the legality of this charter was at question an we'll be addressing the legal issues in the new proposal." City attorney Charles Adams told the council last month that if they vote for the change back to 16, and it's challenged, residents could have been voting in April on how many aldermen they want to have and for their terms of office at the same time they're electing the aldermen.

Holzshuch's proposal will be entered into the minutes of last night's meeting and will be available for people to read later this week.
