SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - One man is under arrest on OWI charges after a Thursday evening crash.
That crash happened on the corner of North 14th Street and Erie Avenue around 8:30 pm. Police say a 30-year-old Sheboygan man was traveling southbound on 14th Street, when he struck a traffic light on 14th and Erie Avenue. His vehicle came to a stop after it ran into another utility pole. Police sergeant Joel Kuszinski says the man has been taken into custody on charges of operating under the influence of a restricted substance.
Kuszinski says that statute covers driving under the influence of drugs that aren't alcohol. "it's illegal to drive in Wisconsin when you're impaired by alcohol or any type of drug. It's also illegal to drive with a specific set of drugs in your system which the law refers to as a restricted controlled substance." He says that also applies to prescription medication. "If they were on a prescription drug, and they were impaired, they would just be arrested for operating while intoxicated."
The man's name is not being released pending formal charges.
