SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- A Sheboygan alderman says a proposed county sales tax is unneeded and unwanted.
Sheboygan County has been proposing creating the 0.5% tax in order to pay for transportation repairs, but Alderman John Bellanger says one only has to look at how long it's taken to get the combined communications center up and running to see that the county is mismanaging its money. "They spent millions and millions of taxpayer money wastefully, that could have been done for $400,000, and it could have been up and running years ago. It's still not up and running yet."
The county's proposal would share part of the proposed $9.5 million money that would be raised with the local municipalities, but Belanger says that the estimated $400,000 that would be coming back to Sheboygan residents isn't enough to justify the proposal. "$400,000 equates to 1.6 miles of a mill and fill complete teardown of the road and regarding 4 inches of new pavement. So it's not much of a benefit to the city." He says that if there is to be any proper sharing of revenues, more would have to come back the the municipalities before it's a viable option.
