FOND DU LAC, Wis. (KFIZ) -- A man rummaging through a trash barrel at a Fond du Lac convenience store for aluminum cans got more than he bargained for.

Police say the man was transported to the hospital around 12:30 this morning after he found a plastic two liter bottle with some white powder inside and got it into his eyes. The bottle then began to smoke inside of the garbage can.

Dispatchers called out the hazardous materials team and a robot to inspect the bottle from a distance. Assistant Police Chief Steve Klein says they suspect the bottle was a makeshift meth lab. "It was a crude, sometimes referred to as a one-pot meth lab operation." Klein calls it a very serious call. "Those chemicals are very dangerous, very combustible, and to have those mixed right next to a gas pump, very dangerous situation."

Both Fond du Lac Police and Fire responded to the call.
