UNDATED (WHBL) -- It's time to get out on your favorite lake, river, or stream for the opening of fishing season in Wisconsin.

DNR fisheries biologist Steven Hogler says targeting walleyes and panfish this morning might be a good idea. "Walleye have completed spawning and they are post-spawn so they should be searching for a meal, and fishing for walleye should be pretty good. Panfish are also feeding at this time. Bass fishing might be a little slow."

Those looking for a bit of fly fishing are also in luck. Hogler says DNR teams have been working to support trout streams. "We've also stocked a number of inland streams with catchable trout. That stocking has been ongoing the past several weeks, so people looking to catch a few trout on local inland streams should also have some pretty good luck."

Anglers heading out to fish on Lake Michigan should be looking close to shore for now. "I know there has been report of a few steelhead and brown trout being caught along some of the harbors along the Lake Michigan Shoreline. A lot of the offshore fishing really hasn't heated up yet." Hogler says the lake just isn't warm enough et for a lot of the game fish to be active.

As always, Hogler reminds anglers to stay safe out on the water, wear their flotation devices and drink responsibly if they are going to drink You can get an OWI if you're driving your boat drunk.

For more information, pick up a regulations handbook at your local bait or license shop, or head to the DNR's website.
