SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- One person was injured this morning in a crash that started a car on fire.
Dispatchers were called just after 7:30 this morning for a report of a car crash at the corner of 5th and Ontario. When first responders arrived, the car was starting on fire already.
Two neighbors had already rushed out to try and help the driver inside. Russell Richter was one of those men. "He broke the back window with a big stone and I reached in to try and open up the door, but the man was unconscious. And as we were doing that, the fire department was pulling up and told us to back off, and they used their tools on the other door and got in."
Richter says the car was still trying to drive and the tires were spinning which lead to more dangers. "The rims started to catch on fire while spinning with the tire, and then the rims started separating and the chunks of the rims were flying off." He says the battery was already leaking at that point and that's when the car started on fire.
Police say a man in his 60s had suffered a medical emergency which lead to the crash. He was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital with third degree burns. His name and condition have not been released.
