PLYMOUTH, Wis. (WHBL) -- Come out to Plymouth High School this weekend for a chance to see the classic comedy "The Man Who Came to Dinner."
This 1939 piece is a classic farce written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman about a New York radio host who slips and breaks his hip on the doorstep of an Ohio family after stopping by for dinner. Theatre director Janet DeJean Newton says the host then takes over the home for several weeks, bringing chaos into the family's life. "They try to do a radio broadcast out of this home, and everything gets a bit befuddled and of course there's delightful romance and silliness and it's a lot of fun."
Newton says that while she's called the director of the show, the students in the class do most of the work. The play is being performed by the Amph-Rats, which are made up of Newton's Advanced Acting Class. She says the class gets to learn a lot about the past of the United States through the performance process. "One of the characters that's mimicked in the play is Harpo Marx, so we get to talk about the Marx Brothers. We're able to talk about what was happening in that time period in terms of cinema and products. There's all those things that were famous then that are very different today." The class has also taken over set design and prop production, and the kids had to create an Egyptian sarcophagus, a "Roach City" and a crate of penguins.
While there's plenty going on this weekend, Newton says people should still find the time to come to the show. "It's a very pleasant, positive experience for high school students and high school theater. So yeah, come see it, I think you'll enjoy it. Plus, what else can you get for three dollars?" Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are $3 at the door.
