SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- The old Alliant Energy office downtown is set for a a seafaring makeover.
The Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan is asking the City Plan Commission for permission to knock down the the old office on the location and build a new headquarters for the group. City planner Chad Pelishek says the city is considering the plan along with new residential developments in the area as part of a broader plan of downtown redevelopment. "These two projects alone should definitely transform that corridor by making it more connected to what we have going on, and giving people a little sense of place of where they are."
The new property has direct water access to the river, and will be used for office space, boat storage and maintenance space. Officials with SEAS say they're also planning to model the property after the nearby Fish Shanties in the Waterfront District, something that Pelishek says will help create some cohesion downtown. "We need to focus on that in order to connect our downtown with what we've done on the waterfront."
The full project will require both a rezoning of the property and a full building permit application. The rezoning part of that process will be considered tonight.
