SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- Time's running out to update your pet license!

Sheboygan Police captain Steve Cobb says that the deadline to get those pet licenses updated is March 31st. If you forget to get them by that, that will be an extra $5 late fee added on to the license. "They have to get their license during that first three months of the calendar year to avoid the late fees later on."

Cobb says it's not about getting a fee from residents, but ensuring public health. "They have to go down to the veterinarian's office and the veterinarian has to issue them a certificate that shows that they've gotten the rabies vaccination, they've gotten their shot, they've had an exam." Having those documents, especially the rabies certificate, can save a lot of hassle in the event that your pet bites someone or gets loose.

You can get your can get your license at the police department during regular business hours. It's $10 for a dog license and $6.25 for a cat license.
