SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department was busy assisting the Kettle Moraine Corrections Institution over the past few months with cases of drug smuggling into their facility. The first case WHBL News reported on took place in September and allegedly involved an inmate coordinating a way to get his fiance and another inmate to bring the items in.
Now a second former inmate is facing charges in Sheboygan County for conspiring to smuggle marijuana into the prison - this time for an incident in October and allegedly involving the inmate's mother. 29 year old Jeremy Wiverstad was charged Friday after an investigation was conducted by the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department.
According to the criminal complaint, correction employees told investigators Wiverstad was visiting with his mother at the prison when he asked to used the bathroom. Given the unusual nature of this request, they conducted a strip search of him and found he was in possession of chewing tobacco and less than a gram of marijuana.
When interviewed, the mother said she had no idea that the chewing tobacco she brought to her son contained illegal drugs. As for Wiverstad, he reportedly said his mother would not have any idea that there would be marijuana with the chewing tobacco, and that he sent a letter out to a friend to provide both items to his mom for her to bring.
He now faces over seven years in prison if found guilty of the charge.
