SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Dulmes Décor Carpet One in Sheboygan received a special honor Monday for helping to raise funds so that smart homes can be built for veterans who have lost at least two limbs.
All Carpet One Stores across the country are fundraising for Building for America’s Bravest. Their goal is to build 100 smart homes so that veterans who have lost arms and/or legs can have more independence at their new homes. Each home has remote controls so that doors can open with a touch of a button, and cabinets can change heights for whoever uses them.
The program is part of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, created in honor of the New York firefighter who ran to the World Trade Center towers and died to help in the response of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The group honors those who they consider are heroes in our country and have given their time, and in some cases their lives, to make the country better.
At Monday’s ceremony, retired New York Firefighter Raymond Thomas spoke for the foundation. He took over ten minutes to share his story about the events of 9-11, and how he was forced to retire due to the effects on his lungs after spending six weeks at Ground Zero searching for survivors and bodies. He mentioned he wanted to continue to help in some way, and found the foundation to be that outlet. So he travels around the country helping to recognize businesses and groups who give to the foundation. Multiple times during his speech, he thanked all who came out and all who have donated to their efforts.
In recognition for their donations, Gary Dulmes was given a piece of steel from Ground Zero in a specially-designed shadowbox.
Dulmes says his store will continue to ask for donations to this cause. Every time someone gives at least ten dollars, Dulmes says he will match it.
