SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The person arrested for causing an officer to sustain injuries while chasing him has been charged.  18 year old Simon Rodriguez Jr. of Sheboygan made his initial court appearance Thursday for an obstructing an officer that caused substantial bodily harm felony.

According to the criminal complaint, Sheboygan Police officer Brandon Kehoe stopped Rodriguez just after midnight on July 10 near Longfellow Elementary School to investigate recent stolen bicycle incidents.

Rodriguez is accused of not cooperating with Kehoe's requests.  The complaint states Rodriguez continuously swore at the officer, ignored the officer's requests to put his hands behind his back, and appeared at times ready to fight.

Kehoe requested back up, and once an officer arrived Rodriguez cooperated.  That only lasted a moment when Rodriguez ran away.  Kehoe did attempt to use a taser, but missed.

Kehoe gave chase to Rodriguez until he lost his footing on the 1200 block of South Eighth Street, causing him to hit a fence post head first.  Paramedics stabilized him with a C-spine and long board.  He was taken to Sheboygan Memorial and diagnosed with a concussion and a sprained right knee.

Rodriguez would reach his home on South Eighth Street to hide.  He eventually surrendered once his mother returned to the home and convinced him to cooperate with police.

In court Thursday, Judge L. Edward Stengel gave Rodriguez a $10,000 signature bond.  A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 22.  He faces up to six in prison if found guilty.
