SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - It has been over a month since work was suppose to begin on widening Highway 23 - from Plymouth west to Fond du Lac - to four lanes. However, a federal court ruling made a few days before work would begin, halted the project until further notice.
State Senator Devin LeMahieu, speaking on WHBL’s “Sheboygan’s Morning News”, says the decision by Judge Lynn Adelman is frustrating, "I don’t understand why, as legislators, we don’t have the ability to build the roads that we think is due fit."
The DOT has been busy providing the judge more information regarding how it got its traffic estimations to justify the project and, thus, federal funds connected to it.
LeMahieu says that the project will still take place, even if it means taking more time. "There will still be some work going forward since there was some (money) in this budget," says LeMahieu. "So, hopefully, by the end of the summer we can get that resolved and get that up and running next year."
LeMahieu did not say if decisions made by Republicans regarding transportation project funding in the next state budget will also impact the end date for the Highway 23 expansion.
