FOND DU LAC, WI (WHBL-KFIZ) - A Fond du Lac man who set fire to his foreclosed home and got into a standoff with police in December of 2013 was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison.  41-year-old Shannon Rogler will also serve 27 years of extended supervision once the prison term is complete.

District Attorney Eric Toney says Judge Richard Nuss took into consideration the recent killings of police officers in the community.  Fond du Lac Police officer Craig Birkholz was killed during a standoff in March of 2011, and State Trooper Trevor Casper died in a standoff with a bank robber in March of this year.

Toney says it was an emotional hearing that featured the testimony of Fond du Lac Police Officer Erik Foster who was shot at that day at the Elms Mobile Home Park.

Rogler told investigators he didn't try to shoot at the officer because he might be somebody's father.  Toney says the evidence in the case show Rogler was trying to harm Foster when he fired the gunshots.
