SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The extreme cold weather is causing additional need for the Salvation Army's 45 bed facility in Sheboygan. The shelter for singles, couples, and families is the only shelter of its kind in Sheboygan County.
Lieutenant Daryl Mangeri says the shelter normally runs at a 91-percent capacity year round, but the recent cold snap has seen an increase in demand. "We’ve had an intake of an additional six to eight people from the time period Friday until (Monday)," said Mangeri. If they do not have room, Mangeri says those people will be referred to shelters in Fond du Lac and Green Bay.
There is also a warming spot available during the daytime. "We make sure that our offices are open 8:30 to 4:30 with no lag time so people can come in any time and get out of the cold, and always willing to extend, you know, a warm beverage," said Mangeri.
