Early winter leads to more slips due to ice

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - ‘Tis the season for slips and falls in Wisconsin.  The early winter weather has caused an uptick for chiropractor businesses treating those who get injured while out in the snow and ice.

Dr. Jeffery Wild, an area chiropractor, says people are suffering from a wide range of injuries.  "We see a lot of hip, low back problems.  We see a lot of neck problems because of the whiplash kind of an action when people fall.  But then you also see the ankle problems, shoulder problems, wrist problems when people are trying to brace themselves when they fall.  So it’s really a combination; depends on how a person falls and if they catch themselves a certain way," says Wild.

Dr. Wild says these injuries are caused by people not paying attention to where they are placing their feet.  "So you think you are on nice solid ground when you’re walking, and all of a sudden you get that shaded area and all of a sudden it’s black ice.  Careful getting out of cars; that’s usually the main thing we see.  People first take a step out of a car, they’re not sure that there’s ice below them and they step out and they go do.  So be careful getting in and out of cars," says Wild.

Dr Wild's best advice for people is to take it slow when there is snow and ice on the ground, and keep walkways clear.
