SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A Sheboygan man will spend five years in prison for causing severe head injuries to his infant son in October 2013. Judge Timothy Van Akkeren sentenced 22 year old Benito Zuniga Jr. recently after a jury took 44 minutes to find him guilty of child abuse following a three day trial last month.
The child - then six months old - was taken to Sheboygan Memorial October 31, then was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee for treatment of head injuries. Zuniga said he was carrying his son when he tripped and dropped him on his head, but a doctor said the type of injuries sustained were more associated with abuse.
In addition to the jail time, Zuniga will serve five years extended supervision.
