SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Democrat Jon Richards of Milwaukee visited the WHBL newsroom Wednesday for an interview, providing his thoughts regarding the upcoming election and issues that will be considered.
One issue he wants to tackle if elected is the understaffing at DA offices across Wisconsin. He says it is a statewide problem that needs to be addressed to ensure state prosecutors can do their job properly. Sheboygan County’s DA Joe DeCecco has said low staffing levels at his office may force them to not prosecute some minor cases in the future.
As for what is currently being done in the state justice department, Richards says he supports J.B. Van Hollen’s “Fly Effect” initiative and the recent passages of legislation focused on heroin, However, he sees all this as just a first step and more needs to be done such as monitoring access to gateway drugs like high powered prescription narcotics.
Richards is one of three Democrats trying to replace J.B. Van Hollen as Attorney General this fall.
