SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - State Senator and House Congressional candidate Joe Leibham of Sheboygan says he is not surprised with this week’s ruling regarding the state’s voter ID law.

He was an author to the bill that passed several years ago, but was ruled unconstitutional by Judge Lynn Adelman who said the bill restricts voting rights for poor and minority voters.  Leibham said the ruling is all part of a Democratic plan “to use judicial process to hold up photo ID requirements and other common-sense election reforms.”

As for what to do next, Leibham said he supports the state’s appeal of the ruling, and will push for photo IDs to be shown at polling stations.  He will support meaningful tweaks to his bill, but is skeptical of an Assembly bill passed this year designed to address some of the factors that led to this week’s ruling.  He says that bill would create a loophole that would fix nothing.
