SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - Roads throughout the Sheboygan area are snow - covered and slippery this morning.  Highway Commissioner Greg Schnell says they’ve been at it overnight and will continue throughout the day today.  He said there were 4 trucks working throughout the night and then early this morning a full force of 43 snowplow trucks and 7 graders.  He said main roads are plowed, but there is drifting.  He said secondary roads can still be a problem.  Schnell said they had to free a couple of people stuck in the middle of the road overnight due to that drifting.  He said, “depending on where you are, there are reports of up to 10 inches of snow west of Sheboygan and only six inches in areas closer to the lake."  Meanwhile, Sgt. Jim Gottsacker, of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, said that in a 24 hour period from about 5 last night, deputies responded to 42 incidents of either vehicles in the ditch or property damage accidents.  He urged people to slow down and give themselves some extra time in getting to their destinations.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - A Sheboygan man is expected to be formally charged later today in connection with a stabbing which occurred over the weekend during a disturbance in a north side apartment.  Police said the 51 year old suspect with an extensive criminal record was taken into custody at the scene about 11:30 on Friday night.  Sgt. Brad Riddiough said an officer observed the victim, a 42 year old Sheboygan man, lying in the bushes at Starbuck’s Coffee Shop at 14th and Erie.  He told officers he had just been stabbed in the back with a large knife at a home in the 1400 block of Erie Avenue.  The victim was airlifted to Froedert in Milwaukee and listed in stable condition at last report.  Officers then went to the home and arrested the suspect.  Riddiough said the two men knew each other and alcohol may be a factor.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - On the eve of his trial on misdemeanor sexual assault charges which led to his recall, former Mayor Bob Ryan is weighing in on Tuesday's mayoral primary.  In a statement issued over the weekend, Ryan is critical of Mayor Terry Van Akkeren and challenger Mike Vandersteen, and endorsed candidate John Belanger.  Ryan said, “I am impressed with his honesty, his integrity and his vision for the future of Sheboygan and he has built a good working relationship with city staff."   Meanwhile, Ryan will go on trial Tuesday in Sheboygan County Court on charges stemming from a drinking binge in Elhart Lake in July of 2011, when he allegedly grabbed a woman’s breasts.  He will be tried before Judge Terrence Bourke on two counts of 4th degree sexual assault.  The incident led to Ryan’s defeat in the recall election in February 2012.

Sheboygan Could be Eligible for Voucher Schools

MADISON, Wis. (WHBL) - If the governor has his way, up to nine more Wisconsin school districts, including Sheboygan, could have low-income students going to private schools at taxpayers’ expense. Republican Scott Walker gave details of his school voucher plans to the Associated Press yesterday, before he planned to make a full public announcement today. Under the governor’s proposed budget, the voucher program would be allowed in districts with over four-thousand students. And at least two buildings in those districts must have grades of “D” or “F” in the state report cards that began last year. For years, the voucher program operated only in Milwaukee. Two years ago, it expanded to the Milwaukee County suburbs and Racine. Now, under Walker’s plan, the Green Bay and Madison districts could qualify – along with Fond du Lac, Beloit, Kenosha, Sheboygan, Superior, West-Allis-West Milwaukee, and Waukesha. Not all of Walker’s fellow Republicans in the Legislature support such an expansion. Senate President Mike Ellis of Neenah says it’s wrong for an entire school district to qualify for private school vouchers if it has just a couple of failing schools. He said it’s possible that students from non-failing schools could take slots intended for low-income youngsters. And both Ellis and G-O-P Senate Education chair Luther Olsen said they would oppose any expansion, unless residents in the affected districts agree to it in a referendum. Many in the public schools say the voucher program takes away too many students and their state aid – while Republicans say it gives poor children a better chance to succeed in life.
