SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Some of the area parochial schools wanting to take part in the new Wisconsin Parental Choice Program say they are excited for this possibility.  Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School Executive Director Jim Pingel said his school got plenty of interest from possible families over the past months.  Pingel said a lot of people have been asking about the program.  He said they have been talking to people about registering for the program.  Wendy Kretschmar, administrator for St. Paul Lutheran School in Sheboygan, said they want to take part to help those who want to attend their school but may not be able to afford it.  She said it will give lower income families the chance to attend their school.  Kretschmar said they are getting the word out about signing up by keeping it local and within certain groups.  She says they been putting information in church bulletins and have been contacting families to encourage them to apply.  Online registration with the state’s Department of Public Instruction for the voucher program will continue until 4 p.m. on August 9.  If more than 500 students apply at the 48 schools that want to take part, then only the 25 that get the most applications will be selected for the upcoming school year.  Under the program the state reimburses the schools for each voucher student.
