SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - It's the first day of classes and that means drivers need to be safe and careful out on the roads today.

Lieutenant Doug Teunissen says most of the problems they see are at the high schools. "Just the mere number of people that need to get into out of schools in the morning cause most of the problems there. And then when people don't following the parking regulations or park in no-drop-off zones and stuff it causes even more congestion." Teunissen reminds people to keep traffic flowing at both North and South High, and to make sure they're not clogging up the designated drop off areas.

Drivers also need to be very careful near the elementary and middle schools. Teunissen says slowing down in school zones and respecting the crossing guards in the crosswalks is key. "In those locations where we have younger age children walking to school, there's always concerns from citizens about children being able to safely cross the street." He also says slowing down will help keep kids safe in case children run out into traffic in the area.

Teunissen says parents should also be telling their student drivers to be mindful of the rules of the road. "Remind those children to drive slowly through the traffic and the school zones, as well as be conscious about the dangers of texting and driving." That includes making sure that teen drivers on graduated licenses are not violating the rules of their permits.

In all, take it slow and easy today, and expect some delays getting where you're going.
