SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan school officials are getting the final touches ready for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
Sheboygan School District superintendent Joe Sheehan says the school facilities are prepared for the kids. "We are ready to go. Our facilities crew does an incredible job of cleaning up and getting ready. And as far as the planning and curriculum, you can only do so much. Come on in kids, we're ready!" Sheehan says that teachers have been spending the summer getting lesson plans drawn up, and that students should be coming to class ready to learn.
The first day of school also means changes for many students, both for those moving up to new schools, and those starting their very first day of school. Sheehan says sometimes the first day of school can be hard to handle... but maybe not always for the kids. "Especially the kindergartners, the parents definitely have a harder time than the kids. We'll see crying parents more than crying kids. It's like, it's okay, go, they're in good hands!"
Sheehan says that if parents are worried about their students, they should be working to engage their children more about what's going on at school. "Whatever level they are, especially the high schoolers, when you say 'How was it?' and the answer's 'Okay,' probe them. Probe a bit and say 'What was okay, what was the best part of the day?' or 'Your biggest challenge was what?'"
The first day of school is scheduled for September 1st.
