SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A proposed townhouse development on South Pier is moving forward after it got approval from the city's planning commission.
City planner Chad Pelishek says South Pier LLC will be able to start their construction once a traffic study is complete. "The city has partnered with a Cedarburg based traffic company that does this kind of traffic work, and they will be completing a traffic study and a parking study within the next two to three weeks." The traffic and parking studies were put into the requirements for construction after a number of residents showed up last week at city council to contest the rezoning of the project.
Local business owners on South Pier complained about the current lack of parking on the pier and told the council they thought that new construction and more people living on the pier would prevent people from getting parking for their businesses. City administrator Darryl Hoffland told the crowd that there were a number of places that could be converted to parking ,and that information would be explored in the pending parking study.
Pelishek says getting the planning approval allows South Pier LLC to finish securing the funding they need to start construction. "This is the last step in the process for them to be able to move forward pending the positive outcome of the parking and traffic study." The developer will start Phase 1 construction in August build 52 units. Phase 2 will include the construction of 36 units and will begin in August 2017.
