MADISON, Wis. (WHBL) - The Department of Transportation wants you to take it easy driving the next few days because of the dangers of buckling pavement.
Barry Paye with the Bureau of Technical Services says many concrete roads across the state will buckle, and he's telling people not to drive over those bumps. "We don't want them damaging their cars, we don't want them hurting themselves, we don't want to cause accidents. We want people to be safe driving on our roads, so if they see a buckle, it's a safety thing, we don't want them to damage themselves or their vehicles."
Paye says those cracks and buckles are caused when existing expansion joints can't cope with the heat and pressure, and split open from expanding concrete. While the DOT can't predict where the buckles occur, he says that drivers can help. "Use caution driving around it and not over it. We will get maintenance crews out there as soon as quickly as we possibly can to repair the situation." He reminds drivers to slow down and move over for work crews out doing their job fixing those breaks.
If you serious problems with pavement, call 911 and make sure dispatchers know where you are and how bad the buckle is.
