SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- Kindergartners across Sheboygan are getting a chance to learn more about police and safety with the annual Safety Town program.
That program is a partnership between the Sheboygan Service Club, the Sheboygan Recreation Department, the Police Department and school district instructors. instructors. Officer Hang Lor says these classes help kids get an outside view on safety issues like safe biking, interacting with the police and fire departments, poisonous household chemicals and more. "We want to build good habits. We know that once bad habits are learned they're harder to break. They're much harder to break than just learning good habits to begin with." He says that while kids may hear these things from parents, hearing them for authority figures helps as well.
Safety Town is a weeklong program and Lor says today the kids will be meeting with firefighters. "Kids will actually run away from fire fighters because they're all dressed up and they're kind of scary. Well this is a chance for them to see them, much like as police officers, they only see us in passing and don't get a chance to talk as a person. And once they get a chance to meet us, they understand we're not big scary people, we're going to help them."
Lor says there's still room in the sessions for your child to join. You can find out more online at http://www.sheboyganserviceclub.org/safety-town/.
