SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- Parents looking for a great day outside with their kids can take a trip to the Bookworm Gardens this weekend.
Education manager Cate Bayles says the Gardens offers kids and their parents some unique opportunities to learn about nature and gardening. "They get the opportunity to live creatively outside, to find those insects, to dig in the compost, to get messy. And you, have permission to get messy and muddy, I can't imagine a better way to spend the day!"
Bayles says one of her favorite features in the park is the Sensory Garden. "You can not only see the beautiful things that are blooming, you can smell the mint, smell the lemon thyme. You can touch and feel. So families get a great opportunity to have those conversations about how to engage their five senses with their learners in the Gardens." That garden was inspired by the works of Helen Keller and it encourages kids to take a break from simply using their eyes to experience nature.
There's a number of events coming up this month, including a parents only celebration of the Summer Solstice next Friday night from 6 to 9 pm. That's followed up on Saturday with a special look at the pollinators of the region with a special Pollinator Picnic.
