SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- The first hot weekend of the summer is coming, and the Department of Natural Resources is reminding folks to spend the day in a state park.
Since's it's hot outside, you might consider a nice weekend on one of the region's lakes or rivers. Conservation Warden Michael Clutter says there's plenty of places to visit right here in the region. "For being so close to Milwaukee, we've got a lot of places to go. Kohler-Andrae State Park, and just for day trips you've got Nichols Creek Wildlife Area, LaBudde Creek. Those are both areas you can catch trout." Clutter says lakes that feature only non-motorized boating have been seeing a rise in popularity. "Kayaking, canoeing, things like that. Butler Lake, just right down Butler Lake Road from Long Lake. Lake Sevens is electric motor boat only, Gerber Lake. Just get out and paddle around and enjoy that. It's nice."
Clutter says getting out in nature is worth the inconvenience of a few insect bites. "A lot of folks are like 'well I don't want to go out in the woods, there's bugs and there's spiders'... well you're missing out. Because that's a very minor part of the whole thing. So when you get home, you check your clothes for ticks, okay. Had a good time? Let's go do something else." You can find out more about local state parks online at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/.
