SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- This may be the best chance all season to see the Northern Lights in Wisconsin.

NASA and other astronomy groups put out an alert this week of a massive burst of plasma and energy from the Sun is headed for Earth. It's called a coronal mass ejection, and when it hits Earth's atmosphere, it turns into the Aurora Borealis. Spaceport Sheboygan executive director Brian Ewenson says that as pretty as the Northern Lights are, they can cause lots of trouble on the Earth's surface. "When people see those wonderful beautiful lights, they're actually incredibly damaging, because there's a tremendous amount of radiation. And it's interfering with electronics, communications, sometimes satellites go out."

If you want a good spot to view the Aurora, find a nice dark spot away from city lights and where you've got a clear view of the sky. The best times to view the Aurora will be tonight from 2 am to around 5 am, looking towards the north.
