FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WHBL) -- Slower Traffic Keep Right. You've probably seen that sign on Wisconsin highways, but it's got the rule of law backing it up.
State Patrol lieutenant Ryan Chaffee says if you're going slower than the rest of traffic around you, move over and let people by. "If you're in that left lane and you see people are approaching from behind and they're moving a a faster rate, move into the right lane to let them pass." Even if you're going the speed limit, Chaffee says trying to block people is not a thing you should be doing. "The safest thing to do is to just be courteous, treat other drivers like you'd like to be treated, and try to get from point A to point B in the safest manner possible."
Failure to move over could cost you. "A citation for violating this law could cost you $213.10 with four demerit points attached to that. So definitely on the financial side of things, you want to avoid something like that if possible." Chaffee reminds people to use the right lane as much as possible if they aren't passing someone and to make sure that other people have room to move around in order to help people merge on and off the highway.
