SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- A Sheboygan man had to be tased multiple times last week while police were trying to take a child into custody.
28-year-old Avery Applewhite faces charges of resisting arrest and bail jumping.
According to a criminal complaint, deputies were called out to the Taco Bell in Plymouth May 11 to try and contact Applewhite and take a toddler into custody on a request from Social Services. When officers arrived, they found Applewhite, the child's mother, and the child in a van in the parking lot.
Deputies say Applewhite tried to get the child into the van to change the baby's diaper before turning the child over. Instead oficers say he locked all three of them inside the van and started to argue with the deputies. The Social Services worker arrived at this point and asked that the child be removed from the van. Deputies managed to unlock the vehicle, and Applewhite started to fight with the officers.
Deputies say they wanted to prevent this from turning into a hostage situation, so they tased Applewhite twice, once by placing the taser directly against his skin before he gave up and turned the child over. Once the child was in custody, however Applewhite allegedly started to fight with deputies once more, and he had to be tased two more times to be arrested.
Applewhite is free on a $500 cash bond and will be back in court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
