SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- Sheboygan Police are on the lookout for unlocked and unsecured bicycles
Captain Jim Veeser says police are just checking for locks or other theft prevention devices and placing behind special tags when they don't find them. "Officers are going either to place them on the bicycle, or on the door of the residence in which they they find these bicycles unattended." Those tags ofer up some basic information on how you can keep your bike secure and safe.
Veeser says the program was initiated by one of his patrol officers who was spotting many unsecured bikes while on patrol and wanted to be able to do something about it. "He'll take a tag which has information about how to prevent bicycle theft, and just attach it to the bicycle Hopefully it will change the behaviour of the owner, ensuring the bicycle remains in their custody versus somebody taking it."
The Sheboygan Police Department asks that residents license their bicycles and report thefts. Bicycle licenses are available at local bike shops and the police department.
