SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- A Plymouth man has been arrested after trying to buy a firearm when he wasn't allowed to.
54-year-old Robert Johnson faces a charge of attempted possession of a firearm as a felon.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called out to Gander Mountain in the Town of Sheboygan last week after Johnson failed a background check when trying to purchase a handgun and several types of ammunition. That check showed that Johnson was a convicted felon, and that he was not allowed to own a weapon. Managers at the store showed police his paperwork where he also lied about being a convicted felon.
Police went to question Johnson, who allegedly told police that he thought he was under conviction for trespassing, and not for burglary stemming from a case in Washington County from 1980. He also told officers that he was purchasing the ammunition for a friend.
Johnson will be back in court May 4th for a preliminary hearing.
