MADISON, Wis. (WHBL) -- Tax day has come and gone, and if you still haven't filed your return, there's still time.
State Department of Revenue spokesperson Stephanie Marquis says even if people owe taxes, they really need to file a return. "Go to our website, pay your taxes online, and if that's a little overwhelming because you haven't filed because you can't afford it, then you can request a payment plan online. But before you can do that, you have to have those state tax returns filed." That includes getting your taxes filed with the federal government, who can also offer that sort of assistance for people.
Marquis says the important thing to note is that while the state can help you with paying your taxes over time, there's nothing they can do to help you in waiving late fees on a late return. "So you want to get those in as soon as possible, so that you help avoid as much of that as you can, because those aren't things that we can waive, those are those are things we have to do under state law." You can also still file for an extension with the IRS. The IRS will keep their e-filing options open until October.
