SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) -- Sheboygan police continue to see a rash of thefts from vehicles, and continue to remind people to take their valuables inside with them and lock the doors of their vehicles.

Lieutenant Doug Teunissen says most people think thieves break open windows to get at their valuables, but that just isn't the case. "When we do experience strings of thefts from cars, it's almost straight across the board, the cars are unlocked." He says all it takes is one person going down a street looking at cars. "They're just checking the door handles to see if the cars are unlocked and then entering them and rummaging through them, and or taking valuables that are in plain sight." That includes purses, wallets, electronic devices, money, and prescription medication.

Teunissen says a tip this week helped stop a thief from stealing from cars along Erie Avenue. "We continue to encourage the public to call and report suspicious activity to help us supplement the patrols we're doing looking for these people." He says outstanding citizenship and efforts from the community can help combat the continuing problem in the region.
