SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A Sheboygan man is heading to prison on burglary charges.
42 year old Chou Yang will spend 15 months in prison after pleading no contest last week to one count of burglary as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors. A charge of criminal damage to property was dismissed but read into the record in his case.
The criminal complaint states surveillance video from inside the home show Yang breaking into a home on the 300 block of Erie Avenue using a rock last June. He was in the home for about 15 minutes before a caretaker arrived and chased him out. The caretaker and police got into a foot chase and he was caught shortly after. Police say they found 11 pieces of jewelry that Yang had allegedly taken from the home in a bush near the home.
Yang pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in July and a judge found him incompetent to stand trial. Yang’s attorney asked for a mental evaluation based on her interactions with him, and said he was speaking to her in gibberish. Yang has been in a state mental health facility since that time receiving treatment.
Once he's completed the sentence, Yang will spend 30 months on extended supervision. He'll also have to pay restitution to the victims.
