SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Since it began in 2007, the Maywood - Ellwood H. May Environmental Park in Sheboygan has used its Food Fair to promote the idea of "Eating Locally, Thinking Globally".  That will continue to be the case as the 2016 edition is set for this Saturday from 9 to 2.

Park Director David Kuckuk tells WHBL News it will feature over a dozen local farmers and food producers.  “The whole idea with this event is to try to showcase some of the folks in about a 50-mile radius of Sheboygan that grow their own food and sell that as a way to generate income.  At this event it gives citizens an opportunity to find out who are these folks that are growing their food and what is all being grown in our local area.”

In a press release, the park says the food fair has three goals:

-Educate people in Sheboygan County and the surrounding areas about the local food opportunities available to them.

-Provide local food producers, CSAs, and restaurants/caterers promoting local food use an opportunity to network with potential customers.

-Increase general awareness of the importance of local food consumption and its impact on our economy and environment.

“So we have vendors that have baked goods and meats and honey and maple syrup and cheeses and all kinds of great foods that people can sample and purchase and take home with them," says Kuckuk.  "It's kind of a fun day of eating and sampling and seeing who the local farmers are.”

There will also be new features to the event to increase family participation.  NOURISH will offer hands-on activities, and musicians Ken Lonnquist and Dave Adler will provide music starting at 11.

Admission to the event is free, thanks in part to event sponsor Alliant Energy.  Donations for the park's upkeep will also be accepted.
