SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The two candidates for Sheboygan Mayor met face to face in the Rocca Room of the Mead Public Library Wednesday night.  A good crowd was on hand for the hour and a half debate during which Mayor Terry Van Akkeren and challenger Mike Vandersteen went back and forth on joint dispatch, economic development, the garbage fee and a county sales tax.  Van Akkeren was critical of Vandersteen for his support in 2010 of a county sales tax.  Vandersteen said he saw it as a way to generate additonal revenue for tax relief.  Vandersteen took Van Akkeren to task over his efforts to get rid of the garbage fee by spending down surplus funds.  Van Akkeren countered that he found ways to fund the budget without the garbage fee. The debate was sponsored by the Sheboygan Press, Lakeland College and the Chamber of Commerce.  The two candidates will meet in the election on April 2nd.
