SHEBOYGAN, WI. (WHBL) - The city of Sheboygan appears ready to get rid of its residency requirement for all employees, except the five department heads, but the issue needs more study. The city council Monday night discussed the issue for about a half hour. Some aldermen felt the council should wait and see if a provision - prohibiting residency statewide - is approved in the state budget. But Alderman Dave Van Akkeren called on the council to take action last night to eliminate the city’s requirement. However, questions were raised about police and fire who have residency included in their labor contracts, and department heads who are covered by ordinance. Aldermen then voted 14 to 2 to send the matter back to committee for further study.
