SHEBOYGAN, WI. (WHBL) - The city of Sheboygan is only two months into its current budget and already preparing for 2014. The city council last night unanimously approved budget guidelines in an effort to head off projected shortfalls next year and the year after. The resolution calls for department heads to bring in budgets not exceeding this year’s. It also calls for a 3 percent reduction in the library budget and a $226,000 reduction the police budget to make up for an expiring state grant. Mayor Terry Van Akkeren said it's going to be a tough budget and he's hoping to keep the officers funded by the state grant on board and to fund the library and other services, but still keep taxes and fees at their current rates. Finance Chairman Don Hammond said it is very early in the process and there will be lots of changes between now and November.
