SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - It may still feel like summer, but a new school year got underway Tuesday morning.  That means a lot of kids will be out and about making their way to and from classes over the next nine months.

With children and teens beginning their morning and afternoon routines walking, biking, or riding to and from school, the Sheboygan Police Department wants to make sure everyone stays safe during these times.

Sergeant Joel Kuszynski tells WHBL News everyone should be prepared for added traffic during the morning hours, especially around school buildings.  “Leave early in order that you have extra time to arrive at your destination.”

Parents should take the time to remind their kids about proper street etiquette, such as where one can cross and how to do so safely.

Kuszynski adds motorists should also be on the lookout for kids, and possibly an extra stop or two.  “Stop for school buses displaying lights and stop signs.  Be aware of school crossing guards and obey their instructions.”

If you are dropping off or picking up kids around a school building, Kuszynski says make sure you know how the process works, and don’t park where it’s not allowed.
