SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - A recent compliance check of businesses selling alcoholic beverages in Sheboygan County found that 39 percent sold to underage volunteers. Sgt. Matt Spence said the Sheriff’s Department began the Underage Compliance Program last year in an effort to prevent the sale of intoxicating beverages to minors. Spence said they used volunteers under the age of 21 to attempt to purchase liquor from taverns, convenience stores, restaurants and grocery stores. Twenty-six of 66 businesses that were checked sold alcohol to the volunteers. Spence said the officers then contacted the businesses to make them aware of their success or failure. He said, as part of the program, they will also be offering free training to all licensed owners and their workers to help better educate them.
