SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - It’s still unknown when Meijer will start building one of their stores on the current Memorial Mall property in Sheboygan they bought earlier this year.
Sheboygan Mayor Mike Vandersteen tells WHBL News the city will help Meijer, but it must benefit the city also. “We’ll have to have a good iron-clad contract that we know that we’re going to get paid back through taxes on the investments that the community makes, and not that we’ll get short changed in the process.”
Vandersteen expects any help will be similar to other projects the city has helped with, such as work at Landmark Square. The city used a TIF district to help pay for an underground garage, but the contract specified the city would get its money back.
“They were responsible for the payoff on it, the city wasn’t,” says Vandersteen. “And that TIF is still on track and making all the payments as they should.”
Vandersteen adds the city will make sure what is done, it will not result in a lawsuit. The city recently lost an assessment lawsuit with a former owner of the mall; a ruling that could cost the city over 800-thousand dollars. The city is still considering whether to appeal the ruling.
WHBL News did contact Memorial Mall to find out any plans for the shopping center in the near future, but Meijer has not replied back.
