SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The public got its chance Tuesday to question changes to plans to replace the athletic fields at Field of Dreams North. Several dozen people attended a special meeting of the Sheboygan Area School District's Board of Education meeting on the topic at North High School, a far smaller number when the issue was being discussed earlier this year.
The district provided more details into changes to its purchase agreement with Aurora for replacing the Field of Dreams North fields. This was done mostly to appease the DNR’s concerns for wetlands and the impact new fields east of Taylor Drive will have on them.
Superintendent Joe Sheehan says changes include the shortening of one soccer field being put in across from where the current field is, the addition of lights to a baseball field in the same area, and the upgrading of a baseball field at Roosevelt Park.
Seven people spoke at the meeting, and all had questions about the changes. This included Ben, who lives on North 29th Street and worries about having the fields in his backyard and people parking around his house. "So the decisions that you make have no impact on you or free time or your evening time."
Judy Straus says she still opposes the changes, but will support it if she hears the district and the city apologize for the way the plan came out publicly. "And I think you owe our community (after) the way you rolled this baby out. It was underhanded. It was secretive."
The district’s board of education will vote on the changed agreement during their July meeting later this month.
