WASHINGTON D.C. (WHBL) - Area Congressman Glenn Grothman is continuring work on ways to get rid of waste and fraud in the federal government.
Wisconsin's Sixth District Congressman is trying to reform the federal earned income tax credit, designed to lower taxes for people with low incomes, and tax credits for people with children.
Grothman tells WHBL News he has introduced a bill to require people claiming the credits to provide valid Social Security numbers to verify who is receiving them. He says the bill will lower the number of illegal immigrants trying to get money from the government.
"Not only save the government a lot of money, but maybe stop or begin to discourage people from entering this country illegally and taking advantage of our welfare system," says Grothman.
Grothman says the bill is currently sitting in committee with the hope to have a hearing in the near future.
