SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - On the eve of his trial on misdemeanor sexual assault charges which led to his recall, former Mayor Bob Ryan is weighing in on Tuesday's mayoral primary. In a statement issued over the weekend, Ryan is critical of Mayor Terry Van Akkeren and challenger Mike Vandersteen, and endorsed candidate John Belanger. Ryan said, “I am impressed with his honesty, his integrity and his vision for the future of Sheboygan and he has built a good working relationship with city staff." Meanwhile, Ryan will go on trial Tuesday in Sheboygan County Court on charges stemming from a drinking binge in Elhart Lake in July of 2011, when he allegedly grabbed a woman’s breasts. He will be tried before Judge Terrence Bourke on two counts of 4th degree sexual assault. The incident led to Ryan’s defeat in the recall election in February 2012.
