SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - Over a dozen schools in Sheboygan County recently received statewide recognition for the way they implement programs to improve student behaviors.

Most of the schools are in the Sheboygan Area School District, where ten elementary, Horace Mann Middle, and South High were named schools of Distinction or Merit by the Wisconsin Response to Intervention Center for implementing specific behavior guidelines.

Seth Harvatine with the district’s Student and Instruction Services department tells WHBL News the recognition is part of a multi-year effort to find and study programs to help teach students how to better interact with each other and reduce the need for discipline during the school day.  "Practices such as looking at the data on a regular basis of what our students are displaying in terms of behavior, and then developing plans and supports to meet those needs."

Harvatine says all schools in the district have seen improved student behaviors, but work will continue to find the best practices and help students who need more attention.  "How are we developing structures to meet kids who are displaying behaviors in the chronic needs."

Also receiving recognition were the elementary and middle schools in the Cedar-Grove Belgium district.
