Sheboygan, WI (WHBL) – When it comes to protecting children on the highways, Sheboygan area drivers appear to be getting that part of the state’s seatbelt law very right. Not one citation was issued for violating the state’s child restraint requirement, during the latest “Click it or Ticket” campaign - as opposed to two citations that were issued the previous year.
But, according to Sheboygan Police, that’s where the positive trend in seatbelt use ends and an apparent increase in seatbelt violations begins.
For the second consecutive year, the annual “Click it or Ticket” campaign yielded a 56% increase in overall traffic stops which resulted in 35 % citations issued to either drivers, or passengers for not wearing seatbelts.
The statewide campaign is meant to increase awareness to the need for seatbelt usage, and reduce the number of fatalities, or injuries resulting from non-usage.
In a statement issued Monday, Sheboygan Police Captain Jim Veeser says, “The officers understand the importance of wearing safety belts while operating a vehicle, both as the driver and as a passenger, and their increased efforts in making traffic contacts in 2015 are to be commended. Hopefully with continued educational safety campaigns along with enforcement, everyone will understand the importance of wearing a safety belt while occupying a moving vehicle."
