SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - With school almost out, the Sheboygan Police Department is ready to help show kids how to ride their bikes properly.

The department will hold a bike rodeo each of the next two Saturdays from 9 to 1.  The first is June 6 at Sheboygan Evangelical Free Church.  The second is June 13 at St. Peter Claver Church.  The free event is for children between the ages of 6 and 14.

Captain Steve Cobb says the event will begin with a child bringing their bike to an inspection area, intended to make sure it is safe to take out onto the road.  "Make sure that their tires have enough air pressure in them, that their bicycle is safe to operate, that all their equipment is in good shape, and they’ll do a little tune up if it needs it; usually chain oiling," says Cobb.

This will be followed by a helmet check.  Kids who bring a helmet will have it checked to make sure it fits properly.  Cobb says kids who don't bring a helmet can receive one for free if the department still has them available.

After this, kids will be able to go through a skills course to simulate riding on city streets.  "It’s focused around the things that small children are going to be dealing with as summer comes and they get more freedom on their bikes crossing streets, riding through crosswalks, stopping, evasive actions," says Cobb.

A child must be accompanied by an adult, who must remain at the site during the event.

Registration can be made on site.  More information on the bike rodeo can be found by clicking on the link below.
