SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - You can help donate food to area pantries without going further than your mailbox. The National Association of Letter Carriers is holding its 23rd annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive nationwide this Saturday.
Local letter carrier Tom Frick, who has helped run Sheboygan’s drive since the mid-90s, says carriers will hand out bags this week for people to use. "People are supposed to put food out by their mailboxes, and somebody will come and pick it up," says Frick.
Frick says carriers do get help from volunteers on this extra busy day running their routes. "To help pick up food, unload trucks, yeah just help wherever we can get it."
All non-perishable foods collected in a local area will be donated to pantries and food banks in that area. Frick says donations do depend on the state of the local economy; a better economy means more donations.
Nationally, Stamp Out Hunger has become the biggest single-day food collection effort with over 72 million pounds last year.
